The BRIT Awards are just a few days away and the excitement is already building up. The award ceremony is always such a special moment, not just for the musicians, but also for us fans watching. Furthermore, the show has never disappointed, as there’s been plenty of moments, which we still talk about!
To get you in the mood for the BRIT Awards, here are the top 5 most memorable moments from the previous shows.
There are plenty of famous feuds in the music industry, but sometimes they have spilled even onto the BRIT stage. In 2000, Robbie Williams decided to end his arguments with Liam Gallagher by challenging him to a fight.
It all started when Liam called Robbie “the fat one” from Take That and Robbie asked the BRIT audience if they’d like to see the two fight on stage for some cold hard cash. Sadly, Liam wasn’t at the show to respond and the fight didn’t ever take place, although the feud continued.
Hosting the BRIT Awards isn’t an easy gig, but the truth be told, some choices have been a bit more successful than others. In 1989, the organisers decided to give the hosting honours to Sam Fox and Mick Fleetwood, which unfortunately didn’t turn out to be such a good idea.
The show was full of awkward moments from people walking on stage at the wrong time and the hosts forgetting their lines. They even went on to introduce Boy George as the Four Tops.
One of the most memorable moments in recent years came in the 2012 BRIT Award show, when the TV producers cut short Adele’s speech. The singer was enjoying one of her best years and when she was on stage giving her speech after receiving the Best British Album award, the producers decided to cut her speech short.
You don’t do that to Adele! She flipped her finger towards the crowds and took a dig at the show next year when her recorded message was shown to the audience by saying, “’I don’t want to keep you too much because I don’t want to interrupt the best album speech at the end of the night.’ She was given the video message as a way to say ‘Sorry’ for the previous year and Adele surely got the last laugh.
Michael Jackson has done plenty of amazing award show appearances and his 1996 performance of the Earth Song was surely going to be among the best. Unfortunately for the King of Pop, the performance won’t be remembered for his stage charisma or electric staging, but for Jarvis Cocker’s bum.
Midway through the song, the Pulp front man stormed the stage and flashed his bare bottom to Jackson. He looked a bit shocked as the cameras quickly turned away to show the audience. Cocker on the other hand was whisked away by security.
Russell Brand will be guaranteed to cause a storm and the BRIT producers took a bit of a gamble in 2007 when they asked him to host the show. Whether you love or loathe Brand, his performance won’t leave many feeling indifferent and his BRIT performance proved just that.
His controversial jokes of the Queen’s ‘naughty bits’ and friendly fire in Iraq managed to create around 300 viewer complaints. But ultimately, broadcast watchdog Ofcom deemed the comments to be ‘on the edge of acceptability’.
It remains to be seen what are going to be the most memorable moments this year! And don’t forget to check out our blog for more interesting music facts, as you wait for one of the best music shows of the year.
